Annual General Meeting (1996)

University of Victoria
18 October 1996

Minutes

Peter Sabor opened the meeting at 13:30 by thanking Carol Gibson-Wood for organizing the conference, and praised her for her choice of plenary speakers, efficient assistants, and fine hotel.

1. Conference President's Report: Carol Gibson- Wood thanked the plenary speakers, and the many people who had helped her with the organization of the conference. She noted the financial contribution of $9,500 from the University of Victoria.

2. President's Report: Peter Sabor asked the members to ratify the Constitution. It was moved by Robert Merrett and seconded by Christa Fell. Carried with 1 abstention.

He urged members to encourage new and lapsed members to join the society, and thanked the retiring Secretary-Treasurer, Paul Wood, for his work in bringing continuity to the membership list and books of the Society.

3. Secretary-Treasurer's Report: Paul Wood reported on the declining membership and the amount of our SSHRCC grant of $2,271. He stressed the need for a tight budget, as we have had to give the University of Windsor an extra $7,000 for the conference last year. He reported a bank balance of about $27,000, and was happy to retire after being Secretary-Treasurer for the last six out of seven years.

4. Lumen -- Executive Editor's Report: Alex Sokalski reported on the revenue for the first half of 1996, and the state of the forthcoming volumes. The Saskatoon volume of Lumen XV has been delayed because of the editor, Peter Hynes' illness, while the essays for the Windsor volume, Lumen XVI, have been selected by Katherine Quinsey. We are expecting revenue of $250 for an essay by Kenneth Graham published in Volume 5 which Norton wishes to reprint.

5. Bulletin -- Editors' Report: Ray Stephanson reported that the bulletin was available in hard copy from him, and electronic mode from Benoît Melançon. They hope to publish two issues per year, in May and December, and keep the cost to about $500 an issue. Their editorial rationale is to develop a sense of community among eighteenth- century scholars, and they would like news from members for the next issue.

6. Future Meetings

1997 -- University of Western Ontario -- Thierry Belleguic

1998 -- University of Alberta -- Robert Merrett

2000 -- Victoria College, University of Toronto -- John Baird, Joint with Scottish Studies

Thierry Belleguic announced that the theme of 1997 would be "Fin de siècle," and asked us to think of what is considered a century or period, and how time is represented. Robert Merrett stated that he would consult with his colleagues on a suitable theme, and John Baird looked forward to a joint meeting with the Scottish Studies Association.
