Calgary Conference 1991

A reminder: The 1991 meeting takes place in Calgary, 17-20 October 1991. We invite proposals for papers in English or French, on any aspect of the eighteenth century, and from scholars of all nations and notions.

The conference is beginning well, with proposals already accepted from France and Spain as well as North America. Paula R. Backscheider of the University of Rochester, François Moureau of the University of Bourgogne, and Terence Penelhum of the University of Calgary are the plenary speakers.

Avis de scrutin statutaire

À sa réunion de Kingston, le Bureau de la SCEDHS a conclu à la nécessité de soumettre à l'approbation de l'ensemble de ses membres, par scrutin postal, les changements statutaires ci-joints. Au nom du Bureau, je vous invite à voter pour ces changements; ils doivent, pour leur adoption, recevoir en leur faveur les deux tiers des votes exprimés.

L'amendement afférent à l'Article IV, Section 2, de nos statuts établit, en vue d'assurer aux différentes tâches à accomplir plus d'efficacité et continuité, «une séparation de corps» entre le travail d'organisation de nos congrès et l'administration permanente de la Société. La Société pourra ainsi, également, rendre compte de ses travaux au CRSSH de façon plus stable, sans que ce dernier se perde dans le dédale de nos pérégrinations tant administratives que territoriales. CRSSH ne sait jamais, en effet, à quelle enseigne nous logeons.

Pour réduire les frais d'envoi, un bulletin de vote accompagne le présent avis de six semaines. Prière de m'envoyer votre bulletin de vote (avec votre cotisation 1991, si vous ne l'avez pas encore acquittée) avant le 28 mai 1991.

Notice of Constitutional Ballot

At the Kingston meeting, the Executive agreed to poll members by mail to seek support for the attached constitutional changes. On behalf of the Executive, I urge you to support them. To carry, the amendments require the support of two-thirds of the votes cast.

The proposed amendment to Article IV, Section 2 separates the busywork of conference organization from administration of a continuing society, no doubt to the benefit of both tasks. SSHRC has expressed exasperation that our current structure makes it hard for them to figure out who owes them what overdue report: it might be well to address their concerns before we apply, this spring, to renew our grant in a climate of reduced funding.

According to my copy of our Constitution (adopted 19 March 1971, amended 10 May 1980), the Executive holds office from one meeting of the general assembly to the next (Art. IV, sec. 4), such meetings to be held at least every second year (Art. III, sec. 1). Since we now usually meet annually, the proposed amendment restores to the Executive the leisure to attend to on-going Society activities that was imagined in the original constitution.

To reduce costs, the ballot is sent with this six-week notice required by the constitution. Please return the enclosed ballot by 28 May 1991 (with your dues form, please, if you haven't yet renewed your membership).

Man and Nature

Members will be glad to hear that Man and Nature, vol. 10 (the proceedings of the 1988 Conference at Dalhousie) will be mailed out this month to those who paid their dues for 1988.

The proceedings from the 1989 conference in Montreal are in progress, though a publication date has not yet been set; proceedings from the 1990 conference at Queen's should appear one year from now.

L'Homme et la nature

Le n^o. 10 (Actes du congrès 1988 de Dalhousie) paraîtra ce mois-ci. Ne le recevront que ceux qui auront acquitté leur cotisation 1988.

Les Actes du congrès 1989 à Montréal sont en voie d'élaboration, mais aucune date de parution n'a encore été fixée. Les Actes du congrès 1990 à Queen's devraient paraître dans un an.

Constitution and Documents

A box of CSECS documents, thought to be missing, has turned up at UBC, where it was placed for safekeeping in the library's special collections. Thanks to George Knox and Paul Wood for keeping us informed.

Colloque franco-portugais/Colloque SATOR de Lisbonne

Ce colloque se tiendra du 6 au 9 novembre 1991 et aura pour thème «Secret et topique romanesque: du Moyen Âge au XVIII^e siècle». Il se propose de «promouvoir un dialogue scientifique entre les chercheurs de la SATOR et les chercheurs portugais qui étudient le roman portugais jusqu'au XVIII^e siècle, en divulguant au Portugal un projet pionnier dans le domaine des applications de l'Informatique à la Littérature, tout en permettant d'ouvrir aux chercheurs invités l'accès à la connaissance du roman portugais de cette époque».

La langue utilisée sera le français.

La présentation de communications sur la topique du roman français contribuera à enrichir les bases de données et permettra simultanément de réfléchir à un problème théorique -- le secret dans le roman -- qui a des implications topiques, herméneutiques, thématiques et narratologiques.

Le colloque sera organisé en fonction des propositions de communications et réservera trois demi-journées aux problèmes qui concernent directement le logiciel SATOR. La collaboration de l'équipe de Montpellier est à espérer à cette fin.

Recherche sur l'épistolaire

L'Association interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l'épistolaire (AIRE) a été fondée en 1987 et est accueillie depuis 1989 par l'Université de Caen. L'AIRE s'est fixé les objectifs suivants: a) regrouper les chercheurs de toutes les disciplines s'intéressant à la pratique épistolaire; b) constituer une bibliographie des recherches sur l'épistolaire, quelle que soit la discipline; c) constituer un annuaire des chercheurs intéressés par la question de l'épistolaire; d) faire circuler toute information pertinente à l'étude de la lettre; e) organiser des colloques, rencontres et séminaires portant sur la lettre; f) publier un Bulletin d'information.

L'AIRE compte parmi ses membres plusieurs dix-huitiémistes. Au Canada, on peut s'inscrire, au coût de 10 $, auprès de Benoît Melançon, Département d'études françaises, Université de Montréal (Québec), Canada H3C 3J7. L'inscription donne droit au Bulletin et à l'annuaire des membres de l'AIRE.

ISECS East-West Seminar 1992

The International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies invites applications from younger scholars in all fields of 18th-century studies to attend an East-West Seminar in Naples, 1-3 June 1992, on the theme POLITICS AND POLITICAL THOUGHT. Candidates

1. must be less than 40 years old on 1 Jan. 1992;

2. must have a PhD or equivalent;

3. must speak French or English, preferably both;

4. must write an original paper (about 20 typewritten pages), based on thorough research and reflection, on the seminar theme and submit it by 1 May 1992 for circulation in advance.

All expenses, including travel and lodging, will be paid.

Papers may deal with the state and the exercise of power, more general power relations in daily life, or the state's involvement in writing and the arts. They may focus on political philosophy or informal discussions of politics and the public sphere.

Applications should include 1) nationality; 2) date of birth; 3) a short c.v. with date of PhD and a list of principal publications (not book reviews or unpublished papers and lectures); 4) a 250-500-word description of the proposed paper; 5) two letters of recommendation (sent separately or forwarded with application by the recommenders); 6) full information on training in foreign languages.

Central and Eastern European scholars receive a month's fellowship (to 1 July); Western scholars are invited to remain in Naples but cannot be subsidized beyond 3 June.

Congrès de 1992 Conference

La réunion 1992 de la SCEDHS se tiendra à l'Université Memorial, St. John's, Terre Neuve, du 15 au 18 octobre 1992. Donald W. Nichol est déjà pleinement impliqué dans son organisation.

The 1992 meeting will take place at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, 15-18 October 1992. Donald W. Nichol is already engaged in organizing the meeting.

News of Members

Kenneth W. Graham (U. of Guelph) will be attending the Bristol Conference, where he will give a paper on William Godwin and organize two Round Table Sessions on William Beckford. He has been elected into a Bye Fellowship at Robinson College, University of Cambridge. During his sabbatical year, 1991-92, he will be doing research into William Godwin. Recent publications include "Narrative and Ideology in Godwin's Caleb Williams," Eighteenth-Century Fiction 2 (1990): 215-28, and three books from New York's AMS Press: Gothic Fictions: Prohibition/Transgression (1989); Vathek and the Escape from Time (1990); The Politics of Narrative (1990).

Donald W. Nichol (Memorial U. of Newfoundland) informs us that Pope's Literary Legacy should be published by the Oxford Bibliographical Society later this year.
