St. John's Conference 1992

Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers: not much in Newfoundland has changed since the 18th century. A few years ago, we took up Swift's suggestion and cultivated glowing cucumbers!

Our 1992 conference (15 to 18 October) will be held in the Hotel Newfoundland, the most commodious and conveniently located for members who want to explore North America's easternmost city. It's within walking distance of Government House, where the Lieutenant Governor will host a reception for us on the first night. You'll be a stone's throw from Signal Hill (a Seven Years War site), the harbour, and George Street--one of the liveliest spots in the New World.

Our plenary speakers will be Roland Bonnel, Isobel Grundy and Pat Rogers. We've already attracted some 40 proposals: sessions are gradually taking shape, so get your proposal (in English or French) to me by 31 May 1992.

Colloque à St. John's

Il ne faut pas croire tout ce que disent les journaux. Tandis que les prédictions économiques de Terre-Neuve sont des plus lugubres, le XVIII^e siècle se porte à merveille pour l'instant.

Notre congrès se tiendra à l'Hôtel Newfoundland du 15 à 18 octobre. De l'hôtel, on peut facilement se rendre à pied à la résidence du gouverneur pour une réception prévue pour la première soirée de notre congrès. St. John's est incontestablement la ville la plus pittoresque du Canada. Il faut l'explorer, surtout George Street et les environs.

Les conférenciers de nos séances plénières seront Roland Bonnel, Isobel Grundy et Pat Rogers. Nous avons déjà reçu et approuvé un bon nombre de projets de communications et les ateliers commencent à se former. Nous vous prions d'envoyer vos propositions (en français ou anglais) avant le 31 mai 1992.

New Title: Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature

As agreed at the 1991 general meeting, we invite members to suggest new names for Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature. The Managing Editor wants to limit our invention as little as possible while retaining a thematic or substantive main title. Send suggestions for a new title to:

Ainsi qu'il a été convenu à l'Assemblée générale de 1991, tous les membres de la SCEDHS sont invités à soumettre de nouveaux titres pour l'Homme et la nature/Man and Nature. Il serait souhaitable qu'un champ entièrement libre soit ouvert à votre imagination, mais que les titres rendent généralement compte de leurs thème et matière. Propositions de titres à adresser à:

Subvention du CRSHC

Le CRSHC a accordé à notre société une subvention annuelle de 5251 $ pour 1992, 1993 et 1994. Le comité chargé d'étudier notre dossier a bien voulu reconnaître la dimension nationale de nos activités et s'est félicité de nos récentes initiatives:

«The proportion of graduate students reflects a real preoccupation with the training of researchers. The initiative to present an award to students judged to have presented the best paper at the annual conference was welcomed.... The [changed] length of the Executive's mandate .... will certainly help to regularize the publication of the Bulletin and probably to increase the number of members.»

Le montant de la subvention, encore que le nombre de nos membres ne cesse de croître, est légèrement inférieur à celui de la subvention précédente: pour suffire aux besins premiers des sociétés, le CRSHC a réduit de 10,43 % les montants que déterminait la formule accompagnant les imprimés relatifs à leurs demandes. Il s'ensuit clairement que l'état de santé de notre société dépendra en grande partie du nombre de ses adhérents. Il importe donc à tous et à toutes de procéder à un dynamique recrutement auprès des collègues et des étudiants.

SSHRC Grant

SSHRC has awarded CSECS a grant of $5,251 per year for 1992 to 1994. The Committee reviewing our application acknowledged our national scope and commended recent initiatives:

The [changed] length of the Executive's mandate .... will certainly help to regularize the publication of the Bulletin and probably to increase the number of members."

This grant is slightly smaller than our previous grant despite increasing membership: in order to accommodate demand, SHRCC reduced its grants to societies by 10.43% from the formula announced with the application forms. Clearly our continued health depends on increasing our membership. Do encourage appropriate colleagues and students to join the Society.

CFH Women's Caucus

On 25 Oct. 1991, the CFH Board of Directors voted to establish a Women's Issues Caucus to "aid collaboration in research, education and lobbying for equity both internally, within the CFH member societies and the Federation as a body, and externally with the SSFC [Social Science Federation of Canada]."

FCEH: Regroupement pour les questions relatives aux femmes

Lors de sa réunion du 25 octobre 1991, le Conseil d'administration de la FCEH a voté en faveur de l'établissement d'un regroupement pour les questions relatives aux femmes. Ce regroupement «apporterait sa collaboration dans les domaines de la recherche, de l'enseignement et du lobbying en matière d'équité au sein des sociétés membres de la FCEH et de la Fédération elle-même, et apporterait sa collaboration à la FCSS à l'extérieur.»

Philosophy Competition: Council of Graduate Schools

The Council of Graduate Schools announces the 1992 competition for the Gustave O. Arlt Award for a junior scholar who has written an outstanding book in the humanities. The 1992 competition is in philosophy.

The nomination--one per institution, submitted by the office of the graduate dean or equivalent on the appropriate form--must be accompanied by a supporting letter and three copies of the nominee's book. The nominee must teach at a North American university and must, within seven years of the award, 1) have taken a doctorate at a North American university and 2) have published a book, written in or translated into English, that represents an outstanding contribution to scholarship in the field. Roland G. Bonnel (Dalhousie U.), a plenary speaker at the upcoming St. John's meeting, has edited Facets of the Eighteenth Century: Descriptive, Social and Normative Discourse (North York: Captus UP, 1991), an interdisciplinary selection of papers from the 1990 Atlantic SECS meeting at St. Mary's.

Benoît Melançon a soutenu, à l'Université de Montréal, une thèse de doctorat -- Diderot épistolier. Éléments pour une poétique de la lettre au XVIII^e siècle. Depuis le 1^er octobre 1991, il est rattaché comme chercheur postdoctoral au Dép. des littératures de l'Université Laval, où il mène des recherches sur le séjour au Canada de L.-A. de Bougainville. L'adresse de correspondance de l'Association interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l'épistolaire (A.I.R.E.), dont M. Melançon est le responsable canadien, reste toutefois la même qu'auparavant:
