East-West Seminar
The International SECS (ISECS) invites applications from younger scholars in all fields of eighteenth-century studies to attend, in Paris in August 1994, an East-West seminar on this theme: The Public--Audiences, Interpretive Communities, Public Opinion and the Public Sphere. Eligible candidates must 1) be less than forty years old on 1 Jan. 1994; 2) have a PhD or equivalent; 3) speak English or French, preferably both; 4) submit by 15 June 1994 for advance circulation an original paper in English or French on the theme of the seminar (about 20 typewritten pages).
Scholars from Central and Eastern Europe will receive a month's fellowship leaving them free to pursue their own work after the week-long meeting of the seminar. Scholars from the West will receive a one-week fellowship to attend the meeting. Discussions will take place in English and French, and the Fellows will be housed in central Paris. Apply to ISECS, Voltaire Foundation, Taylor Institution, Oxford OX1 3NA, England by 1 December 1993, including 1) nationality; 2) date of birth; 3) short c.v. with date of PhD and list of principal publications (not book reviews, unpub. papers, lectures); 4) a brief description of your proposal; 5) two letters or recommendation, which can be sent separately or forwarded with the application by the recommenders; 6) full information on training in foreign languages.
Dalhousie French Studies
L'équipe éditoriale de Dalhousie French Studies aimerait que vous lui fassiez l'honneur de votre collaboration en lui faisant parvenir des propositions d'articles, de numéros spéciaux, des comptes rendus, et en vous abonnant. Dans ses articles sur la littérature française et d'expression française, depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu'à nos jours, Dalhousie French Studies offre des approches critiques variées et rigoureuses; la revue privilégie par ailleurs les analyses textuelles détaillées et publie volontiers des articles jugés trop longs par d'autres périodiques.
Fondé en 1979, Dalhousie French Studies fait paraître depuis 1984 un numéro thématique et un numéro général par an. À partir du numéro 26 (1994), Dalhousie French Studies comprendra une section réservée aux comptes rendus. Les résumés de thèses canadiennes continueront de paraître dans le numéro général annuel.

Congratulations to Thierry Belleguic (Ph.D., Queen's) on his tenure-track appointment in French at Wilfrid Laurier U.
James E. Crimmins (Political Science, Huron College, U. of Western Ontario) has been Assoc. Prof. and Chair of his dept. since 1 July 1991. Since 1 July 1993, he has held a three-year SSHRC research award to continue his work on Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832). He will begin his sabbatical year (1993-94) by completing a project underway for six years, an edition of Bentham's Church-of-Englandism and Its Catechism Examined (1818), with supplementary mss., for Oxford UP's Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham. The SSHRC award will also enable him to make progress on a comprehensive study of "Bentham's Politics" that will integrate Bentham the political actor with Bentham the political thinker and reassess his political importance in his own time and later.
Rosena Davison, French Discipline Representative on the CSECS Executive, is now also Chair of the French Department at Simon Fraser U.
Roger L. Emerson (U. of Western Ontario) and David R. Raynor (U. of Ottawa) co-directed the 20th Hume Conference: Hume and His Scottish Setting, an international and interdisciplinary gathering held at the U. of Ottawa, 6-10 July 1993.

Richard Lebrun, Prof. of History and Rector of St. Paul's College, U. of Manitoba, has recently edited and translated Joseph de Maistre's St. Petersburg Dialogues; or, Conversations on the Temporal Government of Providence (McGill-Queen's UP, 1993).
Benoît Melançon (Dép. d'études françaises, U. de Montréal, C.P. 6128, succ. A, Montréal (Québec), Canada H3C 3J7) prépare une édition de la correspondance canadienne (1756-1760) de Louis-Antoine de Bougainville. Il est notamment à la recherche des lettres autographes dont les copies se trouvent aux Archives nationales du Québec. Tout renseignement sur le séjour de Bougainville au Canada sera le bienvenu.
Ann Messenger (Simon Fraser) has published a textbook edition of Ellis Cornelia Knight's Dinarbas; A Tale: Being a continuation of Rasselas, Prince of Abbissinia (East Lansing, MI: Colleagues P, 1993), the second volume in a series of early women writers.
Ruth Thomas (grad., Queen's) is now a lecturer in German at Lady Eaton College, Trent U.
Paul Wood (History, U. of Victoria), CSECS Secretary-Treasurer, has published The Aberdeen Enlightenment: The Arts Curriculum in the Eighteenth Century (Aberdeen UP, 1993).
