Bulletin

Il a été décidé à Kingston de relancer sur un pied plus ferme la publication du Bulletin de notre Société. Ce Bulletin a connu en effet ces dernières années, malgré le mérite de ses éditeurs successifs, une existence quelque peu sporadique -- sporadicité imputable, il faut l'avouer, à la disette des informations qu'il recevait. Il incombe donc aux membres de la Société de se faire une obligation de communiquer à son éditeur actuel tout renseignement qui présente -- ou pourrait presenter -- un intérêt, voire personnel, pour l'étude des Lumières. Non seulement le Bulletin mais la Société dans son ensemble en tireraient profit à plus d'un titre. Sont également sollicitées les suggestions de rubrique. À ce propos, une liste des étudiants des cycles supérieures avec directeurs de thèse, établissements et régions serait-elle souhaitable?

L'annuaire des membres de la Société fera l'objet d'un prochain numéro du Bulletin.

Newsletter

We agreed in Kingston to test interest in reviving the Society's newsletter, which has appeared only intermittently despite the labours of previous editors. Suggestions for contents include a Directory of Graduate Students (student, supervisor, institution, area?) as well as personal and professional information. A Directory of Members will appear in a subsequent issue.

"If those who depend on [the Bulletin] for intelligence and entertainment, should suffer the disappointment which commonly follows ill-placed expectations, they are to lay the blame only on themselves" (Johnson). Queen's Meeting

Our congratulations to the organizers of the numerous, varied, and distinguished gathering at Queen's. We extend a special welcome to the new appointments and graduate students participating for the first time. The Calgary organizers hope to see all these colleagues in 1991. Please submit proposals by 15 April 1991.

Réunion de Queen's

Nos compliments aux organisateurs de la réunion de Queen's. Elle a été particulièrement riche, savante et variée. Et la participation a été considérable. Puisse la réunion de Calgary, qui se tiendra peu après le Congrès international des Lumières à Bristol, être aussi réussie. Félicitations également à tous les jeunes collègues et étudiants des cycles supérieurs qui y ont prononcé leur première conférence: ils prennent dignement la relève des anciens. L'Université de Calgary les invite à «soumettre» avant le 15 avril 1991 pour sa réunion de 1991.

Demande de subvention, CRSHC

Le moment est venu où la Société se voit dans l'obligation de renouveler sa demande de subvention de trois ans auprès du CRSHC. La date limite qu'impose cette demande est le 2 juillet 1991 et il n'est nullement certain qu'elle soit favorablement reçue: le succès dépend du nombre et de la distribution des membres à jour. Vous êtes donc invité(e) à cotiser ou à vous faire membre au plus tôt. Ceux qui attendront le jour du congrès pour se mettre en règle ne compteront pas aux yeux du CRSHC. Répandez la nouvelle: elle est cruciale. Et encouragez collègues et étudiants des cycles supérieurs à adhérer à la Société. Donnez, au besoin, une copie de votre bulletin d'adhésion. Les membres à jour recevront dans le courant de la nouvelle année l'annuaire des membres (où eux-mêmes figureront).

SSHRC Application

By 2 July 1991, the Society must apply for a new 3-year SSHRC grant. Our success is not certain: it will depend heavily on the number and distribution of our paid-up memberships. Please join soon: those who wait to join at the Conference won't "count" for SSHRC. And please encourage colleagues and graduate students to join too. Pass on a copy of your membership form to anyone who might join. Paid-up members will receive (and appear in) the Directory of Members we will prepare in the new year.

Pour permettre à un ou une collègue des pays de l'Est de participer au Congrès international des Lumières, il est sollicité des donations (5 $ minimum). La date limite du 15 novembre, qui avait été annoncée antérieurement, a été reportée. Vos contributions cette année aideront une érudite polonaise, dont l'argent n'est pas convertible, à participer, en juillet 1991, au congrès de Bristol. European Scholar Fund

The 15 November deadline has passed, but we will forward to ISECS donations to help a Polish scholar attend the Bristol Conference. Please make cheques out to CSECS, mark them "European Scholar" to keep them out of general revenues, and send them to the Calgary Oakleaf, not the Kingston Wood.

Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature

Robert Merrett, Managing Editor, reported in Kingston that the Society's annual publication owes its success largely to American subscriptions. This is good news, but members are encouraged to see that their own university libraries also subscribe to Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature.

Mark Madoff Fund

Saddened by the unexpected loss of an able and congenial colleague, the Society invites contributions to a fund in memory of Mark Madoff. The fund will, we hope, contribute to a prize and book award for the best student paper at the annual meeting. (Further details will follow in the minutes of the 1990 General Meeting.) Please make cheques payable to CSECS, mark them Madoff fund, and send them to the editor.

Sociedad Española

The Sociedad Española de Estudios del Siglo XVIII is planning a quarterly informational bulletin for its members. It will include "the most recent publications of books and articles that deal with the different areas of study in this historical field, as well as announcements of all congresses, debates, and encounters that are organized, a summary of those that have already been held, and in general, any other information that would be of interest to 18th-century scholars."

The Spanish Society would like CSECS/SCEDHS and other national societies to send it pertinent material. Individuals are invited to pass on suggestions directly to the Spanish Society, but perhaps a member in good standing of CSECS will volunteer to be our correspondant with the Sociedad Española. If so, please contact David Oakleaf or Henri Mylarski.

Calgary Group

The University of Calgary Eighteenth-Century Studies Group, founded in 1989 and convened by Alan P.F. Sell (Chair of Christian Thought, University of Calgary), arranges a regular programme of papers, encourages research, and serves as a resource to graduate students. Its 1990-91 programme includes papers from Hugo Meynell (Religious Studies) on Händel, Fan Pen Chen (History) on a Chinese novel, William Magee (English) on Richardson, Glen Campbell (French, Italian, and Spanish) on Lesage, Anne McWhir (English) on 18th-century Corinnas, and Graham Reader (Mechanical Engineering) on the organization of science.

Interested scholars visiting the University of Calgary are encouraged to contact any member of the Group's Committee: Robert H. Carnie (Engish), Shadia B. Drury (Political Science), Marcelo Epstein (Mechancal Engineering), and Alan P.F. Sell (Chair of Christian Thought), and Martin S. Staum (History).

Société montréalaise du XVIII^e siècle

Jon Rowland reports that the active Montreal 18th-Century Society meets on the first Thursday of every month in Dawson Hall (St. James United), 1435 Rue City Councillors, at 19 h. Papers so far include David Hensley (McGill) on Richardson, Rousseau, and Kant, and Marcie Frank (Concordia) on Dryden's All for Love.
