La Société compte aujourd'hui 220 membres; elle en comptait 187 en 1990; il importe de maintenir une nombreuse adhésion qui peut seule assurer, grâce à nos congrès, publications de l'Homme et la nature, Bulletin et rapports avec les CRSHC et FCEH, la qualité de nos services auprès de nos collègues. Please renew your membership in CSECS using the 1992 dues form mailed with this issue of the Bulletin. We now have 220 members, compared to 187 in 1990; by maintaining a healthy membership, we can better serve our colleagues through conferences, publication of Man and Nature, our Bulletin, and our dealings with SSHRC and CFH. 1992 members will receive an improved directory of members with (for those who supply them) e-mail addresses and areas of research.

Henri Mydlarski and David Oakleaf will edit Volume 12 of Man and Nature/ L'Homme et la nature, a representative selection of the best papers from the 1991 Calgary conference. Participants in the lively Calgary conference are urged to send their papers to be considered for publication; submissions should not exceed 12 double-spaced typed pages, including notes, and should be sent to the address above by 15 January 1992.

Mark Madoff Prize

Student participants in the Calgary conference are urged to submit their papers to be considered for the Mark Madoff Prize ($50.00 and a book). Papers need not also be submitted to Man and Nature: if you wish to be considered for both the prize and the volume, please say so in your covering letter to one of the editors of Man and Nature. To be eligible, a student should not have defended her/his thesis at the time of presenting the paper.

Les étudiants qui ont participé au congrès de Calgary sont invités à concourir par surcroît pour le prix Mark Madoff (50 $ et un livre) -- il leur est loisible, s'ils le désirent, de ne pas soumettre le texte de leur communication à l'Homme et la nature. Quelles que soient leurs intentions, ils sont néanmoins priés d'en aviser un des deux éditeurs (Henri Mydlarski ou David Oakleaf) à qui ils feront parvenir leur texte dans les délais prescrits. Il est rappelé qu'une des conditions d'éligibilité stipule qu'un étudiant ne saurait avoir soutenu sa thèse à la date où il aura prononcé sa communication.

Assemblée générale du 20 octobre 1991

Les amendements proposés ont été approuvés par scrutin postal à la quasi-unanimité (voir infra les détails); ont été mis au clair, lors de l'Assemblée générale, la part des responsabilités et les titres du Bureau en instance. A eu également lieu l'élection du nouveau Bureau (voir la liste des membres en fin de Bulletin). Félicitations aux élus.

Le Bureau sortant a fait les propositions suivantes:

qu'un état des finances soit régulièrement vérifié par une personne autorisée et publié dans le Bulletin (ces états n'étant préparés qu'après la tenue de l'Assemblée générale ils ne sont connus de la majorité des membres que sous leur forme préliminaire et provisoire);

que le directeur de rédaction de l'Homme et la nature/Man and Nature se voie octroyer un budget annuel s'élevant, en cas de nécessité, à 500 $ pour suffire aux besoins promotionnels de notre journal (l'allocation actuelle s'élève à 75 $ et ne saurait amortir les frais d'expédition des prospectus et autres; un léger amendement a porté à 500 $ la somme de 300 $ qu'avait initialement proposée le Bureau);

--que le titre de l'Homme et la nature/Man and Nature soit changé et qu'il soit demandé aux membres de la Société de soumettre à la considération du Bureau, en les adressant au directeur de rédaction, de nouveaux titres (le directeur de rédaction a rapporté que d'éventuels abonnés avaient refusé, pour des raisons malheureuses de titre, de recommander le journal à diverses bibliothèques; il a ajouté que le titre pouvait être changé sans que le fût le numéro ISSN. Certaines personnes ont également remarqué que le titre n'attestait en rien la nature des travaux dix-huitiémistes. Le prochain numéro du Bulletin annoncera les conditions afférentes à un nouveau titre.).

Ces trois propositions ont été acceptées.

Annual General Meeting, 20 October 1991

At the Annual General Meeting in Calgary, members clarified the division of responsibilities and titles of the continuing Executive that was overwhelmingly approved by postal ballot (see details later in this issue of the Bulletin). They also elected members to the new Executive (listed at the end of this issue). Congratulations to new and returning members!

The outgoing Executive made the following motions.

That audited or certified financial statements be published in the Bulletin. (Since these are prepared after the general meeting, most members now see only provisional statements.)

CARRIED

That the Managing Editor of Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature receive a budget of up to $500 a year to be used for promoting our journal. (The current allowance of $75 does not meet costs of mailing flyers, etc.; a friendly amendment raised the Executive's figure of $300 to $500.)

CARRIED

That the title of Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature be changed and that members of the Society be asked, through an announcement in the Bulletin, to submit suggestions for a new title to the Managing Editor for consideration by the Executive. (The Managing Editor reported that some potential subscribers refused to recommend the journal to libraries because they objected to the title; he added that we can change our title without changing our ISSN number. Others noted that our current title does not indicate our focus on eighteenth-century studies. The next issue of the Bulletin will announce requirements for the new title.)

Revised Constitution

After clarifications approved at the 1991 Annual General Meeting, the new Executive structure approved by postal ballot reads as follows:

The Executive will consist of the following members:

a) a President

b) a Conference President

c) a Conference Vice-President

d) a Secretary Treasurer

e) the Managing Editor of Man and Nature/L'Homme et la nature

f) the Bulletin Editor

g) five Regional Representatives [as at present]

h) eight Discipline Representatives [as at present]

Apart from the Conference President and the Conference Vice-President, the members of the executive will be elected for three-year terms, renewable, but in the first instance the Secretary-Treasurer will be elected to a four-year term (to ensure continuity between different executives). The Conference President and the Conference Vice-President will be elected to one-year terms only.

The President will be responsible, in consultation with the Conference President and Conference Vice-President, for chairing annual meetings, acting as a liaison with other societies and organizations, raising funds for the Society as a whole, and the like. The Conference President and the Conference Vice-President will be responsible, in consultation with the President, for organizing, and for raising and disbursing funds for, the annual conference and its associated volume of selected proceedings. The Secretary Treasurer will be responsible for membership, for finances associated with the continuing operation of the Society (including receiving dues and disbursing them as directed by the membership); (s)he will also, in conjunction with the President and other members of the Executive, prepare applications to SSHRC. The Managing Editor will be responsible for the production of Man and Nature, the Bulletin Editor for the production of the Society Bulletin on a regular basis.

Amendements apportés aux Statuts et règlements

À la suite des éclaircissements approuvés lors de la tenue de l'Assemblée générale du 20 octobre 1991, la composition du Bureau dernièrement entérinée par vote postal est désormais la suivante:

a) un président

b) un président de congrès

c) un vice-président de congrès

À l'exception du président de congrès et du vice-président de congrès, les membres du Bureau seront élus pour des mandats, renouvelables, de trois ans; toutefois, pour des raisons de transition et de continuité entre les Bureaux successifs, le secrétaire/trésorier du premier mandat en instance sera élu pour une période de quatre ans. Le président de congrès et le vice-président de congrès seront élus pour des mandats d'un an.

Le Président, de concert avec le président de congrès et le vice-président de congrès, aura pour mission de présider les réunions annuelles de la Société, d'agir en qualité d'agent de liaison avec d'autres sociétés et organismes, de lever les fonds indispensables à la vitalité de la Société, bref d'en assurer la bonne marche, la haute tenue et la renommée à travers le monde. Le président de congrès et le vice-président de congrès, de concert avec le président, seront responsables de l'organisation du congrès annuel de la Société et de la levée des fonds nécessaires à son financement ainsi qu'à la publication sélective des Actes. Le secrétaire/trésorier sera tenu d'assurer l'enregistrement des adhésions à la Société et la gestion des finances affectées à son opération et à son maintien (réception des cotisations, mises en paiement autorisées par elle, etc.); il préparera également, de concert avec le président et les autres membres du Bureau, les demandes de subventions auprès du CRSSH. Le directeur de rédaction sera responsable de l'impression et de la diffusion de L'Homme et la nature/Man and Nature; le rédacteur du Bulletin, de la publication régulière du Bulletin de la Société.
