Fondée en 1971, la Société canadienne d'étude du dix-huitième siècle publie une revue, Lumen (ci-devant Man and Nature / L'homme et la nature), elle organise un congrès annuel, elle remet un prix à la meilleure communication lue à son congrès par un étudiant de deuxième ou de troisième cycle (le prix Mark-Madoff), elle offre une bourse d'étude (D.W. Smith) chaque année, elle maintient un site web (vous y êtes!), elle a une vocation pluridisciplinaire, nationale et régionale (les congrès sont attribués en fonction de cette régionalisation), elle compte environ 250 membres, elle est bilingue.
