Present: Rosena Davison, Christa Fell, Carol Gibson-Wood, Robert Merrett, Don Nichol, David Oakleaf, Paul Rice, Alex Sokalski, Eleanor Ty, Paul Wood, Rhoda Zuk.
1. President's Report: Robert Merrett presented his notes on how to proceed with the revision of the Constitution. A lengthy discussion ensued. David Oakleaf asked whether we needed individual representatives for CFH, ISECS, and ASECS, and he emphasized the need to obtain charitable status for the Society. David Oakleaf and Carol Gibson-Wood suggested that it was important to have a stated policy about travel funding for the Executive.
The Executive decided that two documents were needed: a formal constitution, and a statement of policy to guide decision making. A committee was struck to report to the Executive, consisting of Robert Merrett, David Oakleaf, and Paul Wood. The committee intended to draw up a draft constitution by the beginning of February for circulation in the Bulletin, so that a postal ballot on the constitution could be held.
2. Conference President's Report: Alex Sokalski stated that the conference finances were in good shape. He suggested that the Society needs a formal document outlining what is involved in mounting a conference. He noted that he will be the co-editor of the Saskatoon volume of Lumen along with Peter Lopston.
3. Secretary-Treasurer's Report: Paul Wood discussed the state of the Society's finances and current membership.
4. Lumen: Robert Merrett presented his report on Lumen. The Executive endorsed Alex Sokalski's nomination as the new Managing Editor. David Oakleaf noted that he would transfer the excess Calgary funds earmarked for Lumen to the CSECS account. Robert Merrett and Don Nichol discussed the difficulties which had occured in the production of the St. John's volume. The issue was again raised about a production schedule for the publication of successive volumes of Lumen.
5. Madoff Prize: Don Nichol announced that the 1992 Madoff Prize winner was Noel Currie of the University of British Columbia.
6. Bulletin: David Oakleaf appealed for more information for inclusion in the Bulletin. He thought that two issues per year was appropriate. Robert Merrett suggested that that the Society mail copies of the Bulletin to Department Chairs. Regarding his successor, David Oakleaf suggested that the "ideal" editor should be bilingual. Rosena Davison volunteered to solicit contributions from the membership at the AGM.
7. Future Conferences: The University of Windsor will hold the 1995 conference, and the University of Victoria will host the conference in 1996. The Executive was unanimous and enthusiastic regarding the planned conference in Trois-Rivieres in 1997. The University of Western Ontario was interested in hosting the 1998 meeting. It was suggested that we might try to have a conference in Halifax in 1999, and at the University of British Columbia in 2000. David Oakleaf urged that we ensure that the proper regional rotation takes place.
8. New Executive: Paul Wood and Robert Merrett nominated Peter Sabor for the position of President. The Executive unanimously endorsed the nomination. The Executive agreed that the slate of officers presented to the AGM will all serve an extended term of one year because the Society did not meet in 1993. Some discussion of the Fine Arts representative followed.
9. CFH/ISECS/ASECS: Sante Viselli reported that the CFH was meeting the following week, and that it would be lobbying the government to protect SSHRC. He was encouraged to submit a report to the Bulletin. The Secretary Treasurer had mistakenly listed Sante Viselli as the ISECS representative, and this was corrected. The ISECS representative continues to be David Smith. The Executive moved to ask Michael Cartwright to report on ASECS at the AGM.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 11:30pm.
