Executive Meeting (1995)

Windsor Hilton, Windsor, Ontario
11 October 1995

Present: Rosena Davison, Christa Fell, David Oakleaf, Katherine Quinsey, Paul Rice, Peter Sabor, Alex Sokalski, Eleanor Ty, Paul Wood

1. President's report: Peter Sabor thanked Katherine Quinsey for organizing the 1995 conference. He then touched on the problem of membership in the light of our declining numbers. He moved on to announce that he would be drafting a revised constitution in conjunction with the Secretary-Treasurer which would then be submitted to the Executive for comment and approval. Peter Sabor proposed that the size of the Executive be reduced. Eleanor Ty voiced concern regarding the most effective size for the Executive, and Rosena Davison noted that the Executive seemed top heavy given the size of the membership. Peter Sabor announced that David Oakleaf wanted to step down as Editor of the Bulletin, and proposed that Benoît Melançon and Bill Kinsley be appointed co-editors. Alex Sokalski noted that Raymond Stephanson was interested in editing the Bulletin, and Peter Sabor suggested that he contact both Benoît Melançon and Raymond Stephanson to see if they would be willing to take over the editorial duties. Katherine Quinsey asked when the Membership Directory would be issued, and requested that telephone numbers be listed. The problem of confidentiality was noted.

2. Conference president's report: Katherine Quinsey announced that the programme included 125 papers and 4 plenary speakers. In organizing the conference, she had targeted mailings to increase membership and conference registrations. The University of Windsor had contributed $21,000, which included $3,500 earmarked for Lumen. The overall conference budget was $39,000. Katherine Quinsey gave special thanks to her student helpers, who were all undergraduates.

3. Secretary-treasurer's report: Paul Wood discussed Society finances and the state of the Society's membership. David Oakleaf expressed his worries about raising adequate travel funds. Eleanor Ty suggested that it wasn't an appropriate moment for the Society to raise membership dues.

4. Lumen: The Executive Editor presented his report. The issue of transferring funds forwarded by the previous Executive Editor was discussed. The Executive agreed to transfer some of the funds to the Secretary-Treasurer, while leaving the Executive Editor of Lumen a $5,000 operating budget.

5. Bulletin: David Oakleaf had nothing to add to the previous discussion of the future of the Bulletin.

6. Future conferences: Christa Fell suggested that we ensure that suitable accomodation be found for graduate students at future conferences. She expressed the view that the hotel accomodation at the Windsor Hilton was far too expensive for most conference delegates. Paul Wood asked the Executive for permission to negotiate with the Eighteenth Century Scottish Studies Society regarding the 2000 CSECS/SCEDHS conference.

7. New executive: The Executive discussed a replacement for the current Secretary-Treasurer. David Oakleaf urged that a woman be chosen for the position. Peter Sabor thanked Paul Wood for his work as Secretary-Treasurer. Roger Emerson was nominated to take over as the History representative on the Executive.

8. Madoff prize: Alex Sokalski announced that Stephen Snobelen of the University of Victoria was the winner of the 1994 Madoff Prize, and that he would receive a book plus $100. There was some discussion of the 1992 winner, Noel Elizabeth Currie, who had not claimed her prize. The Secretary-Treasurer agreed to contact her.

9. Other societies: No report on ASECS was received from Michael Cartwright, who was on sabbatical. The Executive considered the need for a representative to ISECS. It was agreed that David Smith should continue as ISECS representative, but the Executive saw the need to contact other members prior to ISECS meetings so that they could act as ad hoc representatives. Sante Viselli was unable to present a report on the CFH because he did not receive funding to attend the Windsor conference. Christa Fell noted that she would continue as a member of the CFH Women's Caucus.

10. Other business: There was no other business, and the meeting concluded.
